Isaiah 53 · Grade 3

All We Like Sheep

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah told about God's Servant. People did not think he was special. "He was despised and rejected by men."

"All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way." But God's Servant "carried our suffering." "The punishment that brought our peace was on him."

He was like a quiet lamb. He did nothing wrong. God said, "My righteous servant will justify many." In the New Testament, Philip told a man from Ethiopia that this is about Jesus (Acts 8:32-35).

Memory Verse

“All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

Isaiah 53 · Grade 4

By His Wounds We Are Healed

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 53 is the heart of what many call the fourth Servant Song. It begins, "Who has believed our message?" The Servant grew up "as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground." He did not look like a king. "He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease."

People thought God was punishing him for his own sins. But the truth was different: "Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering." "He was pierced for our transgressions." "All we like sheep have gone astray... and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all." In the New Testament, 1 Peter 2:24-25 says Jesus bore our sins and uses the picture of straying sheep.

"As a lamb that is led to the slaughter... so he didn't open his mouth." He "had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth." Yet the chapter ends in victory: "After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light and be satisfied." In the New Testament, Philip explained this passage to an Ethiopian official as being about Jesus (Acts 8:32-35).

Isaiah 53 · Grade 5

He Bore the Sins of Many

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 is the longest of what many call the Servant Songs, arranged in five stanzas of three verses each. It begins and ends with exaltation, framing the suffering in the middle. The speaker "we" confesses a misjudgment: "we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted." In fact, his suffering was substitutionary—"he was pierced for our transgressions," and "The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed."

The center (verses 4-6) is filled with "our" and "we": our sickness, our suffering, our transgressions. "All we like sheep have gone astray" includes everyone. Verse 10 calls his life "an offering for sin" (Hebrew asham, the guilt offering of Leviticus 5). In the New Testament, this chapter is often quoted or echoed about Jesus' death: Matthew 8:17, John 12:38, Acts 8:32-35, Romans 10:16, and 1 Peter 2:22-25.

The Servant is silent "As a lamb that is led to the slaughter." In the New Testament, Jesus was silent before his accusers (Mark 15:4-5), and John the Baptist called him the Lamb of God (John 1:29). He was "cut off out of the land of the living," assigned "his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death." Yet he lives on: "he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days." "My righteous servant will justify many." He "made intercession for the transgressors." In the New Testament, Luke 23:34 records Jesus praying for those who crucified him.
