Isaiah 52 · Grade 5
The Servant Exalted
Read and Think
Isaiah 52:1-12 continues the "Awake, awake" theme from chapter 51. Now Zion, not God's arm, must wake. Verse 3 states the logic of grace: "You were sold for nothing; and you will be redeemed without money." God owed nothing to Egypt or Assyria, and Babylon would receive no payment. God acts because "my name is blasphemed continually all day long."
Verse 7 is a herald scene. A messenger crosses the mountains with good news (Hebrew basar, the word for bringing good news). His message is the kingdom of God: "Your God reigns!" The watchmen "see eye to eye" Yahweh returning to Zion. "Yahweh has made his holy arm bare in the eyes of all the nations." In the New Testament, Jesus began preaching that the kingdom of God was near (Mark 1:14-15), and Paul cites verse 7 in Romans 10:15 and verse 11 in 2 Corinthians 6:17.
Verse 13 begins what many call the fourth Servant Song (52:13-53:12). It opens with the end: the Servant "will be exalted and lifted up, and will be very high." Then a shock: many were appalled because "his appearance was marred more than any man." Yet "he will cleanse many nations. Kings will shut their mouths at him." In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 15 in Romans 15:21 about Gentiles hearing the gospel, and John 12:32-33 speaks of Jesus being lifted up.
