Isaiah 51 · Grade 4

I Am He Who Comforts You

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 51 begins, "Listen to me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek Yahweh." God says to remember where they came from: "Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you." God called one man and made a nation. He could restore them too. "For Yahweh has comforted Zion... and has made her wilderness like Eden."

God says, "Lift up your eyes to the heavens." Heaven and earth will wear out, "but my salvation will be forever." So God's people should not fear insults from people who will fade. In the New Testament, Jesus says heaven and earth will pass away, but his words will not (Matthew 24:35).

Isaiah cries, "Awake, awake, put on strength, arm of Yahweh." He remembers when God dried up the sea so "the redeemed" could pass over. Then comes the promise: "Those ransomed by Yahweh will return, and come with singing to Zion. Everlasting joy shall be on their heads." God says, "I, even I, am he who comforts you."

Isaiah 51 · Grade 5

The Arm of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 51:1-8 contains three calls to "Listen" or "Look." First, the faithful remnant should "Look to the rock you were cut from"—Abraham and Sarah. If God made a nation from one childless couple, he can repopulate ruined Zion, making her "like Eden." Second, God's "law" and "justice" will be "a light to the peoples." Third, the universe is temporary: "the heavens will vanish away like smoke," but "my salvation will be forever." In the New Testament, Matthew 24:35 and Hebrews 1:10-12 echo this.

Isaiah then pleads, "Awake, awake, put on strength, arm of Yahweh." He recalls creation and the Exodus together: God "cut Rahab in pieces" (a symbol of chaos and Egypt) and "dried up the sea" and "made the depths of the sea a way for the redeemed to pass over." Verse 11, repeating 35:10, promises a new exodus: "Those ransomed by Yahweh will return, and come with singing to Zion."

God answers, "I, even I, am he who comforts you." He asks why they fear mortals "who will be made as grass." The chapter closes with a reversal: Jerusalem had drunk "the cup of his wrath" until she staggered. Now God says, "I have taken out of your hand the cup of staggering." She would not drink it any more. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of drinking a cup himself in Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39).
