Isaiah 51 · Grade 4
I Am He Who Comforts You
Read and Think
Isaiah 51 begins, "Listen to me, you who follow after righteousness, you who seek Yahweh." God says to remember where they came from: "Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you." God called one man and made a nation. He could restore them too. "For Yahweh has comforted Zion... and has made her wilderness like Eden."
God says, "Lift up your eyes to the heavens." Heaven and earth will wear out, "but my salvation will be forever." So God's people should not fear insults from people who will fade. In the New Testament, Jesus says heaven and earth will pass away, but his words will not (Matthew 24:35).
Isaiah cries, "Awake, awake, put on strength, arm of Yahweh." He remembers when God dried up the sea so "the redeemed" could pass over. Then comes the promise: "Those ransomed by Yahweh will return, and come with singing to Zion. Everlasting joy shall be on their heads." God says, "I, even I, am he who comforts you."
