Isaiah 50 · Grade 4

A Face Like Flint

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 50 begins with God asking Israel a hard question. They were in exile, but not because God had divorced them or sold them. "Behold, you were sold for your iniquities." God still had power: "Is my hand shortened at all, that it can't redeem?" He could dry up the sea with a word.

Then comes what many call the third Servant Song. The Servant says, "The Lord Yahweh has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him who is weary." God awakens him "morning by morning" to listen. He did not rebel. Even when people beat and shamed him, he did not run away. In the New Testament, Jesus was beaten and spit on before his crucifixion (Mark 14:65).

The Servant was confident: "For the Lord Yahweh will help me... I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I won't be disappointed." Flint is a very hard stone. Isaiah ends with an invitation: "He who walks in darkness and has no light, let him trust in Yahweh's name, and rely on his God."

Isaiah 50 · Grade 5

The Tongue of Those Who Are Taught

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 50:1-3 answers exiles who thought God had abandoned them. Under Deuteronomy 24, a divorced wife received a certificate; a debtor might sell children. God says neither happened: "Behold, you were sold for your iniquities." The problem was Israel's sin, not God's weakness: "Is my hand shortened at all, that it can't redeem? Or have I no power to deliver?"

What many call the third Servant Song (50:4-9) describes a disciple. The Servant has "the tongue of those who are taught," given so he can "sustain with words him who is weary." He listens before he speaks, for God awakens his ear each morning. His obedience costs suffering; he gave his back to those who struck him and did not hide from shame and spitting. In the New Testament, the Gospels record Jesus enduring this (Matthew 26:67; Mark 14:65), and Luke 9:51 says he set his face to go to Jerusalem.

The Servant's confidence rests in God's vindication: "He who justifies me is near. Who will bring charges against me?" In the New Testament, Paul echoes this in Romans 8:33-34. Verses 10-11 offer a choice. Those who walk in darkness should "trust in Yahweh's name, and rely on his God." Those who "kindle a fire" and walk by their own light will "lie down in sorrow."

  1. Which law describes a certificate of divorce?

  2. What does the Servant do before he speaks?

  3. Which New Testament verse says Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem?
