Isaiah 5 · Grade 3

Wild Grapes

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah sang a song about a vineyard. The owner dug it up and gathered out its stones. He planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in the middle of it. He looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.

The owner asked, "What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?" Then Isaiah explained the song. The vineyard of Yahweh is the house of Israel. God looked for justice and righteousness. But he found oppression and a cry of distress.

Isaiah gave warnings called woes. He warned those who call evil good, and good evil. He warned those who are wise in their own eyes. He warned those who take money to let the guilty go free. They had rejected the law of Yahweh.

Memory Verse

“For the vineyard of Yahweh of Armies is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression, for righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress.”

Isaiah 5 · Grade 4

Woe to Those Who Call Evil Good

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 5 begins as a love song. "My beloved had a vineyard on a very fruitful hill." He dug it, cleared the stones, planted the best vines, built a watchtower, and cut out a wine press. He did everything a good farmer could do. But when harvest came, there were only wild grapes.

The owner asked the people of Judah to judge between him and his vineyard. Since it gave only wild grapes, he would take away its hedge and let it become a wasteland. Then Isaiah reveals the meaning: "For the vineyard of Yahweh of Armies is the house of Israel." God looked for justice, but found oppression; for righteousness, but heard a cry of distress.

Six woes follow. Isaiah warns those who buy up house after house, those who chase strong drink, and those who mock God's plan. He warns "those who call evil good, and good evil," those who are wise in their own eyes, and those who take bribes. Because they rejected the law of Yahweh, God would lift up a banner and call a strong nation from far away against them.

Isaiah 5 · Grade 5

Justice or Oppression?

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 5 opens with a song that sounds like a love song but turns into a parable. The beloved prepared his vineyard with great care: clearing stones, planting "the choicest vine," building a tower, and cutting a wine press. The question he asks is painful: "What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?" Because it yielded only wild grapes, he would remove its hedge and command the clouds to rain no rain on it.

Verse 7 explains the parable. God "looked for justice, but behold, oppression, for righteousness, but behold, a cry of distress." The vineyard is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are "his pleasant plant." In the New Testament, Jesus tells a parable about a vineyard owner and wicked tenants (Matthew 21:33-41), using the same picture of a vineyard with a hedge, a wine press, and a tower.

Six woes then describe the wild grapes. The greedy joined house to house until there was no room for anyone else. Others partied with wine and music but "don't respect the work of Yahweh." Some dared God to hurry his judgment, some reversed moral categories, putting darkness for light and bitter for sweet, and judges acquitted the guilty for a bribe. Yet Yahweh of Armies is exalted in justice. Because they rejected his law, he would whistle for a swift army from the end of the earth, and darkness would cover the land.

Show What You Know

  1. What question does the owner ask about his vineyard?

  2. Who are the vineyard and the pleasant plant?
