Read the Story

God's servant said, "Yahweh has called me from the womb." God said, "I will also give you as a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." In the New Testament, Paul and Barnabas used this verse to explain why they told the Gentiles about Jesus (Acts 13:47).

God promised His people, "They shall not hunger nor thirst." "He will guide them by springs of water." The whole world was called to sing: "Sing, heavens, and be joyful, earth!"

Zion felt forgotten. God said, "Can a woman forget her nursing child?" He promised, "yet I will not forget you! Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands."

Isaiah 49 · Grade 4

I Will Not Forget You

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 49 is what many call the second Servant Song. The Servant says, "Listen, islands, to me... Yahweh has called me from the womb." God made his mouth "like a sharp sword" and made him "a polished shaft." At one point the Servant feels discouraged: "I have labored in vain." But he trusts that his reward is with God.

God gives the Servant an even bigger mission: "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob... I will also give you as a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." In the New Testament, Simeon called the baby Jesus a light for the Gentiles (Luke 2:32), and Paul quoted this verse in Acts 13:47.

Zion complained, "Yahweh has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me." God answers with a beautiful promise: "Can a woman forget her nursing child...? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you! Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands." Zion's children would return from everywhere, so many that she would ask, "Who has conceived these for me?"

Isaiah 49 · Grade 5

My Salvation to the End of the Earth

Name Date

Read and Think

What many call the second Servant Song (49:1-6) is spoken by the Servant himself. Called before birth, he is a hidden weapon: a sharp sword and "a polished shaft" kept in God's quiver. Surprisingly God calls him "my servant, Israel" (verse 3), yet his mission is "to bring Jacob again to him" (verse 5). So the Servant is an ideal Israel who does what the nation could not, restoring Israel itself. In the New Testament, Christians see this fulfilled in Jesus, the true Israel.

The Servant's discouragement—"I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing"—is answered by a widened mission: "It is too light a thing" only to restore Israel. "I will also give you as a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth." In the New Testament, Paul and Barnabas cited this verse in Acts 13:47 as their command to preach to the Gentiles, and Paul applies verse 8 ("I have answered you in an acceptable time") in 2 Corinthians 6:2.

The second half (verses 14-26) answers Zion's lament, "Yahweh has forsaken me." God's reply uses the strongest human image of love—a nursing mother—and then surpasses it: "Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!" Ancient people sometimes tattooed a name on the hand as a sign of devotion; God says, "I have engraved you on the palms of my hands." Zion, who felt bereaved, would be overwhelmed with returning children from north, west, and "the land of Sinim."
