Isaiah 48 · Grade 4

The Furnace of Affliction

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 48 speaks to the exiles who called themselves by God's name "but not in truth, nor in righteousness." God had told them things long before so they could not say, "My idol has done them." He knew they were stubborn: "your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow bronze." Still, God held back his anger "for my name's sake."

God explains their hard times: "Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver. I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction." Like metal in fire, the exile was meant to purify them. God declares, "I am the first. I am also the last." He says, "my hand has laid the foundation of the earth." He calls himself the God "who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go."

God's heart shows in verse 18: "Oh that you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river and your righteousness like the waves of the sea." Then comes the great command: "Leave Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans!" God would give water from the rock again. But the chapter warns that there is no peace "for the wicked."

Isaiah 48 · Grade 5

For My Own Sake

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 48 summarizes the argument of chapters 40-47 and addresses Israel's stubbornness. The exiles "swear by Yahweh's name" but "not in truth." God gave early prophecies precisely because he knew their hearts: so they would not credit their idols Now he announces "new things"—the return from exile through Cyrus—so they could not say, "Behold, I knew them." The image "your neck is an iron sinew" pictures an animal refusing the yoke.

Grace runs through the chapter. "For my name's sake, I will defer my anger." The exile is redefined as refining: "I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction." God acts "For my own sake... for how would my name be profaned?" In the New Testament, 1 Peter 1:6-7 compares the testing of faith to gold refined by fire. God's self-description in verse 17 is pastoral: "who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go."

Verse 18 is one of Scripture's most poignant laments: "Oh that you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river." In the New Testament, Jesus weeps over Jerusalem with similar sorrow (Luke 19:41-42). The chapter ends with a new exodus: "Leave Babylon!" God "caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them" in the wilderness, and will again. The closing warning of no peace "for the wicked" repeats at 57:21, dividing chapters 40-66 into three sections.
