Isaiah 46 · Grade 4

Idols Carried and God Who Carries

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 46 opens with Babylon's chief gods: "Bel bows down. Nebo stoops." When Babylon fell, their statues would be loaded onto animals, becoming "heavy loads, a burden for the weary." Gods that need to be carried cannot carry anyone.

The contrast is beautiful. God says Israel has "been carried from their birth." "Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver." Meanwhile, people "pour out gold from the bag" to hire a goldsmith, and "he makes it a god." But it cannot answer or save.

God calls his people to "Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other." He says, "I declare the end from the beginning." He would bring "a ravenous bird from the east," Cyrus, to carry out his plan. "I bring my righteousness near."

Show What You Know

  1. Who were Bel and Nebo?

  2. What is the big contrast in the chapter?

  3. How long does God promise to carry His people?

  4. Who is the ravenous bird from the east?

Think About It

  1. God carries us from birth to gray hairs. When have you felt carried by God?

  2. Some things we trust become burdens we must carry. What burdens can you give to God instead?

Memory Verse

“Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.”

Isaiah 46 · Grade 5

I Declare the End from the Beginning

Name Date

Read and Think

Bel (a title of Marduk) and Nebo (his son, god of writing) were Babylon's chief gods. Kings like Nebuchadnezzar carried Nebo's name. In the great New Year festival, their statues were carried in procession. Isaiah pictures a different procession: the statues loaded onto weary animals as Babylon falls. The idols "could not deliver the burden, but they have gone into captivity."

The key word is "carry." Idols are carried; Yahweh carries. Israel has "been carried from their birth." God pledges, "Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver." The idol-maker scene shows the same irony: "Some pour out gold from the bag" for a god that must be carried on shoulders and "can not answer." In the New Testament, Jesus invites the weary to come to him for rest (Matthew 11:28-30).

God's case rests on prophecy: "I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done. I say: My counsel will stand." His tool is "a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country"—Cyrus. The chapter ends with good news for the "stubborn-hearted": "I bring my righteousness near."

Show What You Know

  1. Who were Bel and Nebo?

  2. What is the key word in this chapter?

  3. Which New Testament passage invites the weary to Jesus?

  4. What does God's prophecy prove?

Think About It

  1. Idols are carried, but God carries us. What things in our culture demand that we carry them instead of carrying us?

  2. God declares the end from the beginning. How can trusting God's plan help you when the future seems uncertain?

Memory Verse

“I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done. I say: My counsel will stand, and I will do all that I please.”
