Isaiah 44 · Grade 4

Half for Fire, Half for a God

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 44 begins with blessing. "Don't be afraid, Jacob my servant." "I will pour my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring." They would grow like "willows by the watercourses." God declared, "I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.... I don't know any other Rock."

Then Isaiah describes idol-makers with humor. A man plants a tree. When it grows, he burns part of it to warm himself and bake bread. "The rest of it he makes into a god." He bows down and prays, "Deliver me, for you are my god!" He never asks, "Isn't there a lie in my right hand?"

God reminds Israel, "I have formed you. You are my servant." "I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions.... Return to me, for I have redeemed you." Heaven and earth should sing. Then God names a future king: he says that Cyrus is "my shepherd" and promises Jerusalem "will be built."

Show What You Know

  1. What will God's people grow like?

  2. What does God say about other rocks?

  3. What question did the idol-maker never ask?

  4. Which future king does God name?

Think About It

  1. The idol-maker trusted something he made himself. What things do people today trust as if they could save them?

  2. God blots out sins like a thick cloud. How should knowing you are forgiven change the way you live?

Memory Verse

This is what Yahweh, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies, says: “I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God.
