Isaiah 4 · Grade 3

Cloud by Day, Fire by Night

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah 4 brings good news after hard warnings. In that day, Yahweh's branch will be beautiful and glorious. The fruit of the land will be the beauty and glory of the survivors of Israel.

Those who are left in Zion and Jerusalem shall be called holy. The Lord will wash away the filth of the city. Then he will make it clean again.

Yahweh will create a cloud and smoke by day over Mount Zion. By night there will be the shining of a flaming fire. Over all the glory will be a canopy. It will be a shade from the heat. It will be a refuge from storm and from rain.

Memory Verse

“Yahweh will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night, for over all the glory will be a canopy.”

Isaiah 4 · Grade 4

A Canopy of Glory

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 4 is only six verses long, but it turns from judgment toward hope. Verse 1 ends the sad picture from chapter 3. So many men had fallen that seven women would ask one man to let them be called by his name. Then comes a new beginning: "In that day, Yahweh's branch will be beautiful and glorious."

The people who remain in Zion will be called holy, "even everyone who is written among the living in Jerusalem." Before that, the Lord would wash away the city's filth by the spirit of justice. God's cleansing would come first, and holiness would follow.

Then Isaiah describes God's protecting presence. Yahweh will create a cloud and smoke by day and a flaming fire by night over Mount Zion. Many readers think of the pillar of cloud and fire that led Israel out of Egypt in Exodus. Over all the glory will be a canopy, "a shade in the daytime from the heat, and for a refuge and for a shelter from storm and from rain."

Show What You Know

  1. What sad picture from chapter 3 does verse 1 end?

  2. Who will be called holy?

  3. What will Yahweh create over Mount Zion by night?

  4. What three things will the canopy provide?

Think About It

  1. God promised shade from heat and shelter from storms. What storms in life do you need God's protection from?

  2. God cleaned his people before calling them holy. Why do you think being made clean comes before being called holy?

Memory Verse

“Yahweh will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night, for over all the glory will be a canopy.”

Isaiah 4 · Grade 5

The Branch of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

After three chapters of warnings, Isaiah 4 offers a brief but bright picture of restoration. It opens with the last scene of chapter 3's judgment: seven women begging one man to take away their reproach. Then the tone changes with the phrase "in that day." Yahweh's branch will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride of the survivors. Later prophets also speak of a Branch: Jeremiah 23:5 and Zechariah 3:8 use the word for a coming righteous King from David's line, so many Christians read this verse in that light.

The survivors left in Zion will be called holy, "even everyone who is written among the living in Jerusalem." This happens after the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion "by the spirit of justice and by the spirit of burning." God's purifying judgment is not the end; it prepares a holy people.

Finally, Yahweh will create over Mount Zion a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night, echoing the pillar that led Israel in the wilderness. "Over all the glory will be a canopy." God himself will be his people's shade from the heat and their shelter from storm and rain. In the New Testament, Revelation 21:3 describes God dwelling with his people in the new creation.

Show What You Know

  1. What phrase marks the change from judgment to hope?

  2. Which later prophets also speak of a Branch?

  3. By what two spirits will the Lord wash Zion?

  4. What does the cloud and fire echo?
