Isaiah 4 · Grade 5

The Branch of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

After three chapters of warnings, Isaiah 4 offers a brief but bright picture of restoration. It opens with the last scene of chapter 3's judgment: seven women begging one man to take away their reproach. Then the tone changes with the phrase "in that day." Yahweh's branch will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride of the survivors. Later prophets also speak of a Branch: Jeremiah 23:5 and Zechariah 3:8 use the word for a coming righteous King from David's line, so many Christians read this verse in that light.

The survivors left in Zion will be called holy, "even everyone who is written among the living in Jerusalem." This happens after the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion "by the spirit of justice and by the spirit of burning." God's purifying judgment is not the end; it prepares a holy people.

Finally, Yahweh will create over Mount Zion a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night, echoing the pillar that led Israel in the wilderness. "Over all the glory will be a canopy." God himself will be his people's shade from the heat and their shelter from storm and rain. In the New Testament, Revelation 21:3 describes God dwelling with his people in the new creation.
