Isaiah 39 · Grade 4

Nothing Will Be Left

Name Date

Read and Think

After Hezekiah got well, "Merodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah." Babylon was still a small kingdom then, but it wanted friends against Assyria.

"Hezekiah was pleased with them." He showed the messengers all his treasures and his armor. "There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah didn't show them." Hezekiah seemed proud of his riches and did not mention what God had done for him.

Isaiah asked, "What have they seen in your house?" Then he gave God's word: "Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house... will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left." Hezekiah replied, "Yahweh's word which you have spoken is good." He was glad there would be "peace and truth in my days."

Show What You Know

  1. Who sent letters and a present?

  2. What did Hezekiah show the messengers?

  3. What did Isaiah say would happen to Hezekiah's treasures?

  4. How did Hezekiah answer God's word?

Think About It

  1. Hezekiah showed off his treasures. What is the difference between being thankful for what you have and showing off?

  2. Hezekiah was glad there would be peace in his own lifetime. Why is it important to care about people who will come after us?

Memory Verse

“‘Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up until today, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says Yahweh.”

Isaiah 39 · Grade 5

Carried to Babylon

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 39 (parallel to 2 Kings 20:12-19) closes the historical bridge and turns the book toward Babylon. Merodach-baladan, a Chaldean prince who repeatedly rebelled against Assyria, "sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick, and had recovered." 2 Chronicles 32:31 adds that God left Hezekiah to test him, to know all that was in his heart.

Hezekiah "was pleased with them, and showed them the house of his precious things." The text stresses completeness: "There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah didn't show them." After trusting God so fully in chapter 37, he now displays human wealth and military strength to a foreign power.

Isaiah's questions expose the problem, and the prophecy reverses it: "Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up until today, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left." This was fulfilled about a century later (2 Kings 24-25). Hezekiah answers, "Yahweh's word which you have spoken is good." He adds, "For there will be peace and truth in my days." His response may show humble acceptance or a narrow concern for his own time; the text leaves it open. The next chapter begins with a call to comfort God's people.

Show What You Know

  1. What had Merodach-baladan heard about Hezekiah?

  2. What does 2 Chronicles 32:31 add?

  3. When was the prophecy fulfilled?

  4. How does the text leave Hezekiah's response open?

Think About It

  1. After trusting God in a crisis, Hezekiah relied on wealth and showing off in good times. Why can success be a greater test of faith than trouble?

  2. Chapter 40 begins with comfort right after this warning. What does that suggest about God's plans even when people fail?

“‘Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up until today, will be carried to Babylon. Nothing will be left,’ says Yahweh.”
