Isaiah 37 · Grade 4
You Alone Are God
Read and Think
When Hezekiah heard Rabshakeh's words, "he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh's house." He asked Isaiah to pray. Isaiah answered with God's word: "Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard."
Sennacherib sent a letter saying, "Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you." Hezekiah took it to the temple "and spread it before Yahweh." He prayed, "you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth." He asked God to save them "that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only."
God answered through Isaiah. The king of Assyria had mocked "the Holy One of Israel." But God said, "I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake." That night Yahweh's angel struck the Assyrian camp. Sennacherib went back to Nineveh and never attacked Jerusalem.
