Isaiah 35 · Grade 4

The Ransomed Will Return

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 35 follows the sad picture of Edom with a bright picture of new life. "The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose." The land will "see Yahweh's glory, the excellence of our God."

Isaiah tells God's people to encourage each other: "Strengthen the weak hands, and make the feeble knees firm." They should tell fearful hearts, "Be strong! Don't be afraid!" God would come to set things right and save his people. "Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame man will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing." In the New Testament, Jesus pointed to these very kinds of healings as signs of who he is (Matthew 11:4-5).

"A highway will be there, a road, and it will be called “The Holy Way”." No lion would be there. "Yahweh's ransomed ones will return, and come with singing to Zion; and everlasting joy will be on their heads."

Show What You Know

  1. What will the land see?

  2. What should God's people tell those with a fearful heart?

  3. Which New Testament passage points to these healings?

  4. How will Yahweh's ransomed ones come to Zion?

Think About It

  1. Isaiah told people to strengthen weak hands and encourage the fearful. Who could you encourage this week, and how?

  2. In the New Testament, Jesus pointed to his healings of the blind and deaf (Matthew 11:4-5). Which of these healings would you most like to have seen, and why?

“Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.”

Isaiah 35 · Grade 5

Joy on Their Heads

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 35 is the bright counterpart to chapter 34. Where Edom's land became a wasteland, here the desert flowers: "The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose." The glory of Lebanon, Carmel, and Sharon, regions famous for forests and fields, is given to the wilderness, and "They will see Yahweh's glory, the excellence of our God."

The community is called to mutual encouragement: "Strengthen the weak hands, and make the feeble knees firm." Hebrews 12:12 in the New Testament quotes this command. The message for fearful hearts is "Be strong! Don't be afraid! Behold, your God will come." His coming means justice against oppressors and salvation for his people. The signs follow: blind eyes opened, deaf ears unstopped, the lame leaping, the mute singing. In the New Testament, when John the Baptist asked whether Jesus was the coming one, Jesus answered by pointing to these very signs (Matthew 11:2-5).

The climax is a highway: "it will be called “The Holy Way”. The unclean shall not pass over it." It is safe; "No lion will be there." It recalls the Exodus road and anticipates the return from exile in Isaiah 40. Its travelers are "Yahweh's ransomed ones," a word for those bought back from slavery. "They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away."

  1. Why are Lebanon, Carmel, and Sharon mentioned?

  2. Which New Testament verse quotes the command to strengthen weak hands?
