Isaiah 34 · Grade 5
Not One Will Be Missing
Read and Think
Isaiah 34 and 35 form a pair, the closing panels before the historical chapters 36-39. Chapter 34 shows God's judgment on the nations; chapter 35 shows the joy of the redeemed. The summons is universal: "Come near, you nations, to hear! Listen, you peoples. Let the earth and all it contains hear." The imagery is cosmic, with the heavens rolled up like a scroll, a picture echoed in the New Testament in Revelation 6:13-14.
Edom stands as a representative of all nations hostile to God. Descended from Esau, Edom had a long history of conflict with Israel, and Psalm 137:7 and Obadiah condemn its cruelty when Jerusalem fell. Isaiah declares, "For Yahweh has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion." God's justice defends the oppressed. Edom's political order would collapse: "They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but none shall be there; and all its princes shall be nothing." God would "stretch the line of confusion over it," reversing creation into emptiness, and wild creatures would inherit the land.
The chapter ends by underscoring the reliability of prophecy: "Search in the book of Yahweh, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. For my mouth has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them." Even the wild animals occupy Edom by God's assignment. This is one of the earliest mentions of a written "book of Yahweh" that readers could check for themselves.
