Isaiah 34 · Grade 4

For the Cause of Zion

Read and Think

Isaiah 34 opens with a call to the whole world: "Come near, you nations, to hear! Listen, you peoples." God is the judge of all nations, especially those that attacked his people.

The chapter focuses on Edom. Edom came from Esau, Jacob's brother, but it had become a bitter enemy of Israel. Isaiah says, "For Yahweh has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion." This means God would set things right for his people. Edom's proud kingdom would end: "They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but none shall be there." Its land would be left to the pelican, the owl, and the raven.

The chapter closes with confidence in God's word: "Search in the book of Yahweh, and read: not one of these will be missing." What God says, he does.

Show What You Know

  1. Who does Isaiah call to listen?

  2. Where did Edom come from?

  3. What does a year of recompense for the cause of Zion mean?

  4. What did Isaiah tell readers to search?

Think About It

  1. God promised to set things right for His people. How does it help to know that God sees when people are treated unfairly?

  2. Isaiah said not one of God's words will be missing. How does this help you trust what the Bible says?

Memory Verse

“Search in the book of Yahweh, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. For my mouth has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.”

For families: talk about these together.

  • How does it help to know God defends you?
  • Where are you tempted to go your own way instead of God's?
