Isaiah 31 · Grade 5

The Hovering Protector

Read and Think

Isaiah 31 is the fourth woe of chapters 28-33 and repeats the warning against an Egyptian alliance. Horses and chariots were the most advanced weapons of the day, and Egypt had many. Yet Isaiah exposes the deeper failure: "they don't look to the Holy One of Israel, and they don't seek Yahweh!" Isaiah adds an ironic note: "Yet he also is wise." The politicians thought they were clever, but God is wiser.

The key contrast is in verse 3: "Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit." When God acts, "he who helps shall stumble, and he who is helped shall fall." Then God gives two complementary images. As a lion stands firm against a crowd of shepherds, "so Yahweh of Armies will come down to fight on Mount Zion." And "As birds hovering, so Yahweh of Armies will protect Jerusalem. He will protect and deliver it. He will pass over and preserve it." The words "pass over" recall the Passover in Egypt (Exodus 12:13). In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of longing to gather Jerusalem's children as a hen gathers her chicks (Matthew 23:37).

The chapter calls for repentance: "Return to him from whom you have deeply revolted." Genuine return would mean casting away idols made by their own hands. Then, "The Assyrian will fall by the sword, not of man," a prediction fulfilled when the angel of Yahweh struck the Assyrian camp (Isaiah 37:36).

For families: talk about these together.

  • God fought for Jerusalem without any human army. How should that change where you look for help first?
  • What are you tempted to depend on instead of God?
  • What is one way you could live out this chapter this week?
