Isaiah 30 · Grade 4

Saved in Returning and Rest

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 30 warns those who "take counsel, but not from me." Judah's leaders sent treasure on donkeys and camels to Egypt for help, but Egypt was useless. God called Egypt "Rahab who sits still." God told Isaiah to "write it before them on a tablet," because the people said to the prophets, "Don't prophesy to us right things."

God offered a better way: "You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence." But they refused, wanting fast horses instead. Even so, "Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you." "Blessed are all those who wait for him."

God promised, "When he hears you, he will answer you." Though they had hard times, their teachers would be seen again, and "your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”" They would throw away their idols. God would send rain, and the light of the sun would be seven times brighter when God heals his people.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was it wrong to go to Egypt?

  2. What did God call Egypt?

  3. Where would their strength be?

  4. What would the voice behind them say?

Think About It

  1. God said strength comes from quietness and in confidence. How can quiet trust in God be stronger than rushing to fix things yourself?

  2. God waits to be gracious. How does it feel to know God is eager to show you kindness?

  • God said the people would throw away their idols like dirty rags. What would it look like to turn away from something that keeps you from God?

Isaiah 30 · Grade 5

Strength in Quietness

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 30 is the second woe in this section, aimed at "the rebellious children... who take counsel, but not from me." Judah's diplomats traveled through dangerous desert, "through the land of trouble and anguish," carrying riches to Egypt. But "Egypt helps in vain." Isaiah calls it "Rahab who sits still," a boastful monster that does nothing. Because the people told the seers, "Don't see!" and the prophets, "Don't prophesy to us right things," God had Isaiah record the message as a written witness "for the time to come forever and ever."

The heart of the chapter is verse 15: "You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence." The people refused, preferring to flee on swift horses. Yet the next verses reveal God's patience: "Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you... Blessed are all those who wait for him." In the New Testament, Peter likewise says the Lord is patient, not wishing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9).

God promises restoration: no more weeping, answered prayer, and guidance. "Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”" Idols would be thrown away, rain would return, and "the light of the sun will be seven times brighter... in the day that Yahweh binds up the fracture of his people." The chapter ends with Assyria terrified by Yahweh's voice, while God's people sing "as in the night when a holy feast is kept."

Show What You Know

  1. What does Isaiah call Egypt?

  2. Why did God have Isaiah write the message down?

  3. Which New Testament verse also describes God's patience?

  4. What would happen in the day Yahweh binds up his people?

Think About It

  1. The people asked prophets to tell them only pleasant things. Why do people sometimes avoid hearing the truth, and how can you welcome it?

  2. God's voice says, This is the way. Walk in it. How does God guide you today through His Word and wise people?

Memory Verse

“Therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you, for Yahweh is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him.”
