Isaiah 30 · Grade 5
Strength in Quietness
Read and Think
Isaiah 30 is the second woe in this section, aimed at "the rebellious children... who take counsel, but not from me." Judah's diplomats traveled through dangerous desert, "through the land of trouble and anguish," carrying riches to Egypt. But "Egypt helps in vain." Isaiah calls it "Rahab who sits still," a boastful monster that does nothing. Because the people told the seers, "Don't see!" and the prophets, "Don't prophesy to us right things," God had Isaiah record the message as a written witness "for the time to come forever and ever."
The heart of the chapter is verse 15: "You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence." The people refused, preferring to flee on swift horses. Yet the next verses reveal God's patience: "Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you... Blessed are all those who wait for him." In the New Testament, Peter likewise says the Lord is patient, not wishing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9).
God promises restoration: no more weeping, answered prayer, and guidance. "Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”" Idols would be thrown away, rain would return, and "the light of the sun will be seven times brighter... in the day that Yahweh binds up the fracture of his people." The chapter ends with Assyria terrified by Yahweh's voice, while God's people sing "as in the night when a holy feast is kept."

The people asked prophets to tell them only pleasant things. Why do people sometimes avoid hearing the truth, and how can you welcome it?
God's voice says, This is the way. Walk in it. How does God guide you today through His Word and wise people?
Memory Verse
“Therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you, for Yahweh is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him.”
