Isaiah 3 · Grade 4

The Plunder of the Poor

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 3 continues the warning to Judah. The Lord, Yahweh of Armies, would take away the whole supply of bread and water. He would also remove the mighty man, the judge, the prophet, the elder, and the counselor. Without good leaders, the people would oppress one another. No one would even want to be a ruler, because there was neither bread nor clothing.

Isaiah explains the reason: "Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen; because their tongue and their doings are against Yahweh." They paraded their sin like Sodom and did not hide it. Even so, God makes a difference between people: "Tell the righteous that it will be well with them, for they will eat the fruit of their deeds."

Yahweh stands up as judge. He accuses the elders and leaders: "It is you who have eaten up the vineyard. The plunder of the poor is in your houses." He asks why they crush his people and grind the face of the poor. Then he warns the proud daughters of Zion. All their fine anklets, rings, robes, and perfume would be taken away, and instead of beauty there would be sorrow.

  2. What reason does Isaiah give for Judah's fall?

Isaiah 3 · Grade 5

Leaders Who Crush the Poor

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 3 describes what happens when a nation's leadership collapses. Yahweh would remove supply and support: bread, water, soldiers, judges, prophets, elders, counselors, and skilled craftsmen. In their place, inexperienced youths would rule, and society would turn against itself. The people would oppress one another, the young would act proudly against the old, and a man with clothing would be begged to take charge of the ruins.

The cause was not bad luck but rebellion: their tongue and their doings were against Yahweh. Their sin was public, paraded like Sodom. Yet the warning includes a word of hope for individuals: "Tell the righteous that it will be well with them." Their opposite is stated just as clearly: "Woe to the wicked!" for the deeds of their hands will be paid back to them.

Then Yahweh stands up to contend with the elders and princes. They had eaten up the vineyard, which Isaiah 5 identifies as God's people. "What do you mean that you crush my people, and grind the face of the poor?" God also judges the arrogant daughters of Zion, listing the many luxury items they relied on, from signet rings to fine linen. Their beauty would be replaced by sackcloth, and the city would mourn. The chapter shows that God holds leaders accountable for how they treat the weak.

Show What You Know

  1. What would happen to society when the leaders were removed?

  2. How does Isaiah describe the way the people showed their sin?

  3. What question does God ask the leaders?

  4. What would replace the women's beauty?

Think About It

  1. God accused leaders of grinding the face of the poor. How can Christians stand up for people who are treated unfairly?

  2. The proud women trusted in luxury items. What things do people today rely on to feel important, and how can you keep them in their place?
