Isaiah 3 · Grade 4

The Plunder of the Poor

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 3 continues the warning to Judah. The Lord, Yahweh of Armies, would take away the whole supply of bread and water. He would also remove the mighty man, the judge, the prophet, the elder, and the counselor. Without good leaders, the people would oppress one another. No one would even want to be a ruler, because there was neither bread nor clothing.

Isaiah explains the reason: "Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen; because their tongue and their doings are against Yahweh." They paraded their sin like Sodom and did not hide it. Even so, God makes a difference between people: "Tell the righteous that it will be well with them, for they will eat the fruit of their deeds."

Yahweh stands up as judge. He accuses the elders and leaders: "It is you who have eaten up the vineyard. The plunder of the poor is in your houses." He asks why they crush his people and grind the face of the poor. Then he warns the proud daughters of Zion. All their fine anklets, rings, robes, and perfume would be taken away, and instead of beauty there would be sorrow.
