Lips and Hearts

Name Date

Read the Story

The Lord said His people "honors me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me." They said the right words, but did not truly love God.

Isaiah said people were acting as if clay could tell the potter, "He didn't make me." But God is the potter, and we are the clay. God made us.

God promised, "the deaf will hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind will see." "The humble also will increase their joy in Yahweh." In the New Testament, Jesus made the deaf hear and the blind see (Matthew 11:5).

Memory Verse

“The humble also will increase their joy in Yahweh, and the poor among men will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.”

Isaiah 29 · Grade 4

Near with the Mouth

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 29 is addressed to "Ariel," a name for Jerusalem, the city where David camped. Hard times were coming, but God would suddenly scatter the enemies "like fine dust." Yet the people were spiritually asleep. God's message was to them "like the words of a book that is sealed."

The Lord explained the real problem: "this people draws near with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me." Their worship was just rules taught by people. In the New Testament, Jesus quotes these words to religious leaders (Matthew 15:8-9).

Isaiah said they were treating the potter like clay. Then God promised a marvelous change. "In that day, the deaf will hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind will see out of obscurity and out of darkness." "The humble also will increase their joy in Yahweh, and the poor among men will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel."

Show What You Know

  1. What is Ariel?

  2. What was God's message like to the sleeping people?

  3. What was the real problem with their worship?

  4. Where in the New Testament does Jesus quote this verse?

Think About It

  1. The people honored God with their lips but not their hearts. How can you make sure your worship comes from your heart?

  2. Clay cannot tell the potter he did not make it. How does knowing God made you change how you treat Him?

Memory Verse

“The humble also will increase their joy in Yahweh, and the poor among men will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.”

Isaiah 29 · Grade 5

The Sealed Book Opened

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 29 opens with "Woe to Ariel," a poetic name for Jerusalem, the city "where David encamped." Ariel may mean "altar hearth." God would bring the city low, so that its voice would rise "out of the ground," but then the multitude of foes would vanish suddenly, "like a dream, a vision of the night." This fits the sudden defeat of Assyria's army in Isaiah 37.

Spiritually, Jerusalem was in a stupor. Prophets and seers were covered, and God's vision was "like the words of a book that is sealed." The root problem was hypocrisy: "this people draws near with their mouth and honors me with their lips, but they have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which has been taught." In the New Testament, Jesus applies this verse to the Pharisees in Mark 7:6-7, and Paul quotes verse 14 about the wisdom of the wise perishing in 1 Corinthians 1:19.

The planners who hid their counsel from God turned reality upside down, as if clay said of the potter, "He has no understanding." Yet God promised reversal: "the deaf will hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind will see." The tyrant and the scoffer would vanish. Jacob would no longer be ashamed, and those who err in spirit would come to understanding. In the New Testament, Jesus points to such signs in answering John the Baptist (Matthew 11:5).

Show What You Know

  1. What may the name Ariel mean?

  2. Which later event fits the sudden vanishing of the foes?

  3. Where does Paul quote Isaiah 29:14?

  4. What reversal does God promise in verse 18?
