Isaiah 28 · Grade 3

The Precious Cornerstone

Name Date

Read the Story

Some proud leaders would not listen to God. God said He will be "a crown of glory" to His people who are left.

The leaders made fun of Isaiah. God said, "Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone." In the New Testament, Peter says Jesus is this stone (1 Peter 2:6).

Isaiah told about a farmer. The farmer plows, plants seed, and gathers grain the right way. God teaches him. God "is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom."

Memory Verse

“This also comes out from Yahweh of Armies, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.”

Isaiah 28 · Grade 4

Precept on Precept

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 28 begins with a warning to Ephraim, the northern kingdom, whose proud leaders were like "the fading flower." But God promised, "In that day, Yahweh of Armies will become a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the residue of his people."

The leaders of Jerusalem mocked Isaiah's simple messages: "precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little." They thought they were too smart to need God's teaching. They trusted lies to keep them safe.

God answered with a promise: "Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily." In the New Testament, Peter applies this to Jesus (1 Peter 2:6). Isaiah told of a farmer. God teaches him to plow and thresh well. God "is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom."

Show What You Know

  1. What were Ephraim's proud leaders like?

  2. How did the leaders mock Isaiah's messages?

  3. What does God lay in Zion?

  4. Why does the farmer work wisely?

Think About It

  1. The leaders mocked simple teaching from God. Why is it important to keep learning God's Word little by little?

  2. In the New Testament, Jesus is the sure foundation (1 Peter 2:6). What does it mean to build your life on Him?

Memory Verse

Therefore the Lord Yahweh says, “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily.

Isaiah 28 · Grade 5

A Tried Stone in Zion

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 28 begins a series of six woes (chapters 28-33). The first targets Samaria, the capital of Ephraim, sitting like a crown on its hill: "the fading flower of his glorious beauty." Its leaders were given to excess, and judgment would sweep them away. Yet God would become "a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the residue of his people."

Jerusalem's leaders were no better. They ridiculed Isaiah's message as fit for toddlers: "precept on precept... line on line... here a little, there a little." God replied that since they rejected plain speech, he would speak to them through foreign invaders with a strange tongue. In the New Testament, Paul quotes Isaiah 28:11 in 1 Corinthians 14:21. The leaders boasted of a "covenant with death," thinking it would shelter them. God said their refuge of lies would be swept away.

In contrast, God would build on a sure foundation: "Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily." In the New Testament, both Romans 9:33 and 1 Peter 2:6 identify this cornerstone as Christ. The chapter ends with a parable of a farmer who plows, sows, and threshes each crop with the right method. God's judgments are equally measured, for he "is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom."

  1. Which six chapters contain the series of woes?

  2. Where does Paul quote Isaiah 28:11?
