Isaiah 28 · Grade 5
A Tried Stone in Zion
Read and Think
Isaiah 28 begins a series of six woes (chapters 28-33). The first targets Samaria, the capital of Ephraim, sitting like a crown on its hill: "the fading flower of his glorious beauty." Its leaders were given to excess, and judgment would sweep them away. Yet God would become "a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the residue of his people."
Jerusalem's leaders were no better. They ridiculed Isaiah's message as fit for toddlers: "precept on precept... line on line... here a little, there a little." God replied that since they rejected plain speech, he would speak to them through foreign invaders with a strange tongue. In the New Testament, Paul quotes Isaiah 28:11 in 1 Corinthians 14:21. The leaders boasted of a "covenant with death," thinking it would shelter them. God said their refuge of lies would be swept away.
In contrast, God would build on a sure foundation: "Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily." In the New Testament, both Romans 9:33 and 1 Peter 2:6 identify this cornerstone as Christ. The chapter ends with a parable of a farmer who plows, sows, and threshes each crop with the right method. God's judgments are equally measured, for he "is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom."
