Isaiah 27 · Grade 4

Israel Will Blossom

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 27 begins with God's victory over evil. "In that day, Yahweh... will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent." Leviathan was a sea monster that stood for the powers that oppose God.

Then God sings a new vineyard song. In chapter 5, God's vineyard produced wild grapes. Now God says, "I, Yahweh, am its keeper. I will water it every moment. Lest anyone damage it, I will keep it night and day." God promises, "In days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit."

God would deal with Israel's sin, and the people would break down their idol altars. Finally, "a great trumpet will be blown." Those scattered in Assyria and Egypt would come home "and they will worship Yahweh in the holy mountain at Jerusalem."

Show What You Know

  1. What did leviathan stand for?

  2. How is this vineyard song different from chapter 5?

  3. What will Israel fill the world with?

  4. What happens when the great trumpet is blown?

Think About It

  1. God waters His vineyard every moment. How do you see God caring for you every day?

  2. In the New Testament, Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches (John 15:5). How can you stay close to Jesus so you bear good fruit?

Memory Verse

“In days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit.”

Isaiah 27 · Grade 5

The Vineyard Song Revisited

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 27 concludes the Isaiah Apocalypse. It opens with cosmic victory: "Yahweh with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan, the twisted serpent." Ancient peoples told stories of a chaos monster of the sea; Isaiah declares that Yahweh alone conquers it. In the New Testament, Revelation 12:9 and 20:2 picture the final defeat of the old serpent, the devil.

Next comes a second vineyard song, reversing the sad song of Isaiah 5. There, God's vineyard yielded wild grapes and was abandoned. Here, God sings, "A pleasant vineyard! I, Yahweh, am its keeper. I will water it every moment." God's anger is gone; he wants Israel to "take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me." The result: "Israel will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit." In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the true vine (John 15:1-5).

Israel's discipline had a purpose: removing sin, symbolized by crushing the altar stones like chalk and tearing down the Asherah poles. The chapter closes with a great ingathering: "a great trumpet will be blown; and those who were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and those who were outcasts in the land of Egypt, shall come." In the New Testament, Matthew 24:31 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16 also speak of a trumpet gathering God's people.
