The Vineyard Song Revisited

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 27 concludes the Isaiah Apocalypse. It opens with cosmic victory: "Yahweh with his hard and great and strong sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan, the twisted serpent." Ancient peoples told stories of a chaos monster of the sea; Isaiah declares that Yahweh alone conquers it. In the New Testament, Revelation 12:9 and 20:2 picture the final defeat of the old serpent, the devil.

Next comes a second vineyard song, reversing the sad song of Isaiah 5. There, God's vineyard yielded wild grapes and was abandoned. Here, God sings, "A pleasant vineyard! I, Yahweh, am its keeper. I will water it every moment." God's anger is gone; he wants Israel to "take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me." The result: "Israel will blossom and bud. They will fill the surface of the world with fruit." In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the true vine (John 15:1-5).

Israel's discipline had a purpose: removing sin, symbolized by crushing the altar stones like chalk and tearing down the Asherah poles. The chapter closes with a great ingathering: "a great trumpet will be blown; and those who were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and those who were outcasts in the land of Egypt, shall come." In the New Testament, Matthew 24:31 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16 also speak of a trumpet gathering God's people.
