Isaiah 24 · Grade 5
Yahweh of Armies Will Reign
Read and Think
Isaiah 24 opens what many call the Isaiah Apocalypse (chapters 24-27), where the focus widens from individual nations to the whole world. "Behold, Yahweh makes the earth empty, makes it waste, turns it upside down." No social rank escapes: "as with the servant, so with his master." The cause is moral: the earth "is polluted under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant."
The joy of life drains away: "The mirth of tambourines ceases," and "The confused city is broken down." Yet in the middle of judgment, praise rises: "These shall lift up their voice. They will shout for the majesty of Yahweh." The call goes out to "glorify Yahweh in the east" and "in the islands of the sea." Isaiah himself is grieved by the sin he sees: "I pine away! I pine away! woe is me!"
The chapter ends with God's final triumph. Yahweh will "punish the army of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth on the earth." Then "the moon will be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for Yahweh of Armies will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem; and glory will be before his elders." In the New Testament, Revelation 21:23 echoes this hope: the holy city needs no sun or moon, because God's glory lights it.
