Who Has Planned This?

Read the Story

Tyre was a great city by the sea. It was the market of nations. Its merchants were princes.

Isaiah asked, "Who has planned this against Tyre?" He answered, "Yahweh of Armies has planned it, to stain the pride of all glory." The ships of Tarshish would wail.

Tyre would be forgotten for seventy years. Then it would trade again. But its money would be "holiness to Yahweh." It would give food and clothing to those who dwell before Yahweh.

Isaiah 23 · Grade 4

The Market of Nations

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 23 is "The burden of Tyre." Tyre was a wealthy Phoenician port. Isaiah called it "the market of nations," a city "whose merchants are princes." Ships from Tarshish carried its goods across the sea.

When the news came that Tyre had fallen, the ships of Tarshish would wail. Isaiah asked, "Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns?" The answer: "Yahweh of Armies has planned it, to stain the pride of all glory." No city is too rich for God to humble.

Tyre would be forgotten seventy years. Afterward, God would visit Tyre, and it would trade again. But this time, "Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to Yahweh." Its wealth would feed and clothe those who dwell before Yahweh.

Show What You Know

  1. What was Tyre?

  2. Who planned the fall of Tyre, and why?

  3. How long would Tyre be forgotten?

  4. What would happen to Tyre's wealth afterward?

Think About It

  1. Tyre was proud of its money. How can you keep money from becoming the thing you are proud of?

  2. Tyre's wealth would one day be holiness to Yahweh. How can you use what you have to serve God and others?

“Yahweh of Armies has planned it, to stain the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.”

Isaiah 23 · Grade 5

Holiness to Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 23 ends the first series of oracles against the nations with Tyre, the great Phoenician trading power. Tyre's ships reached Tarshish in the far west, and its colonies spread across the Mediterranean. Isaiah calls it "the market of nations" and "the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes." King Hiram of Tyre had supplied cedar for Solomon's temple (1 Kings 5).

The chapter asks the key question: "Who has planned this against Tyre?" The answer reveals God's purpose in history: "Yahweh of Armies has planned it, to stain the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth." Economic power, like military power, stands under God's rule. The news would even shake Egypt.

After seventy years, God would restore Tyre's trade, but its profits would be transformed: "Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to Yahweh. It will not be treasured nor laid up." Instead, its wealth would go "for those who dwell before Yahweh, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing." In the New Testament, Jesus visited the region of Tyre (Mark 7:24-30), and believers lived there (Acts 21:3-4). Revelation 21:24-26 pictures the glory of the nations brought into the holy city.

Show What You Know

  1. What did King Hiram of Tyre supply for Solomon?

  2. What is God's purpose in Tyre's fall, according to verse 9?

  3. How would Tyre's wealth be transformed?

  4. Which New Testament passage pictures the glory of the nations brought into the holy city?

Think About It

  1. Tyre's wealth would one day be holiness to Yahweh. What would it look like for your money, time, and talents to be holy to God?

  2. God stains the pride of all glory. How can you use success in a way that honors God rather than yourself?

Memory Verse

“Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to Yahweh. It will not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise will be for those who dwell before Yahweh, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.”
