Isaiah 23 · Grade 4
The Market of Nations
Read and Think
Isaiah 23 is "The burden of Tyre." Tyre was a wealthy Phoenician port. Isaiah called it "the market of nations," a city "whose merchants are princes." Ships from Tarshish carried its goods across the sea.
When the news came that Tyre had fallen, the ships of Tarshish would wail. Isaiah asked, "Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns?" The answer: "Yahweh of Armies has planned it, to stain the pride of all glory." No city is too rich for God to humble.
Tyre would be forgotten seventy years. Afterward, God would visit Tyre, and it would trade again. But this time, "Her merchandise and her wages will be holiness to Yahweh." Its wealth would feed and clothe those who dwell before Yahweh.
