Isaiah 22 · Grade 4

The Valley of Vision

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 22 is "The burden of the valley of vision," a message about Jerusalem itself. When danger came, the people prepared carefully. They looked to the armor in the house of the forest, repaired the breaches of David's city, and gathered water. "But you didn't look to him who had done this."

God called them to weeping and sackcloth, a sign of repentance. Instead there was "joy and gladness," and they said, "Let's eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die." They trusted their plans and ignored their God.

God then spoke to Shebna, the treasurer, who had cut a tomb for himself on high. God would remove him and call "my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah." Eliakim would be "a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem." God said, "I will lay the key of David's house on his shoulder. He will open, and no one will shut."

Isaiah 22 · Grade 5

The Key on His Shoulder

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 22 surprises the reader by placing Jerusalem among the nations under judgment. "The valley of vision" was the city where God revealed himself, yet it had become careless. Facing invasion, the leaders inspected the armor in "the house of the forest," broke down houses to fortify the wall, and built a reservoir. These were wise steps, but they made them without God: "you didn't look to him who had done this, neither did you have respect for him who planned it long ago."

God called for repentance, but the city answered with a party: "Let's eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die." In the New Testament, Paul quotes these words in 1 Corinthians 15:32 to describe life without hope of the resurrection. God declared that this sin would not be forgiven until they died.

The chapter ends with two officials. Shebna, the proud treasurer, carved a grand tomb for himself, so God would remove him. In his place God would install "my servant Eliakim," clothed with Shebna's robe and belt. "I will lay the key of David's house on his shoulder. He will open, and no one will shut. He will shut, and no one will open." In the New Testament, Revelation 3:7 applies these words to Jesus, who holds the key of David. Even Eliakim, "a nail in a sure place," would one day give way, but in the New Testament the authority of Christ never fails (Revelation 3:7).
