Isaiah 22 · Grade 4

The Valley of Vision

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 22 is "The burden of the valley of vision," a message about Jerusalem itself. When danger came, the people prepared carefully. They looked to the armor in the house of the forest, repaired the breaches of David's city, and gathered water. "But you didn't look to him who had done this."

God called them to weeping and sackcloth, a sign of repentance. Instead there was "joy and gladness," and they said, "Let's eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die." They trusted their plans and ignored their God.

God then spoke to Shebna, the treasurer, who had cut a tomb for himself on high. God would remove him and call "my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah." Eliakim would be "a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem." God said, "I will lay the key of David's house on his shoulder. He will open, and no one will shut."

Show What You Know

  1. What city is the valley of vision?

  2. What did the people fail to do while preparing?

  3. What did the people say instead of repenting?

  4. What would Eliakim be to Jerusalem?

Think About It

  1. The people prepared their walls but forgot God. How can you include God in your plans instead of just making plans on your own?

  2. Shebna built a monument to himself, but Eliakim served others. What is the difference between living for yourself and serving others?

Memory Verse

“I will lay the key of David’s house on his shoulder. He will open, and no one will shut. He will shut, and no one will open.”

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for opening doors. Help me . Amen.

Take It Home

For families: talk about these together.

  • The people trusted their weapons and their water supply. What do you depend on when trouble comes, and how can you depend on God first?
  • How do you want to be remembered?
