Fallen Is Babylon

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 21 opens with "The burden of the wilderness of the sea," a message about Babylon. The vision was so heavy that Isaiah felt deep distress. God told him, "Go, set a watchman. Let him declare what he sees."

The watchman was faithful: "I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime, and every night I stay at my post." When the riders came, the news was, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the engraved images of her gods are broken to the ground." The idols Babylon trusted could not save it.

A short message about Dumah follows. Someone calls from Seir, "Watchman, what of the night?" The answer is, "The morning comes, and also the night. If you will inquire, inquire. Come back again." The chapter ends with Arabia, where the people of Tema brought water and bread to fleeing travelers.

Show What You Know

  1. What is the wilderness of the sea a message about?

  2. How faithful was the watchman?

  3. What happened to Babylon's idols?

  4. What did the people of Tema do for fleeing travelers?

Think About It

  1. The watchman stayed at his post day and night. What does it look like to be faithful in small jobs God gives you?

  2. The watchman said, If you will inquire, inquire. Come back again. Why is it good to keep coming back to God with your questions?

Memory Verse

“Behold, here comes a troop of men, horsemen in pairs.” He answered, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the engraved images of her gods are broken to the ground.”

Isaiah 21 · Grade 5

Watchman, What of the Night?

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 21 contains three short oracles. The first, "The burden of the wilderness of the sea," concerns Babylon. The vision was so severe that Isaiah said, "My heart flutters." Elam and Media, the peoples who would later form the Persian empire, are called to attack.

God instructs Isaiah, "Go, set a watchman." The watchman cries, "Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime, and every night I stay at my post." Finally the report comes: "Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the engraved images of her gods are broken to the ground." In the New Testament, Revelation 14:8 and 18:2 echo this cry over the final Babylon.

The second oracle concerns Dumah, near Edom (Seir). A voice calls, "Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?" The reply is honest but mysterious: "The morning comes, and also the night. If you will inquire, inquire. Come back again." Relief and darkness would both come. The third oracle, on Arabia, shows compassion in hard times, as Tema "met the fugitives with their bread."

Show What You Know

  1. Which peoples are called to attack Babylon?

  2. Which New Testament passages echo the cry over Babylon?

  3. What does the watchman's answer to Dumah mean?

  4. How did Tema show compassion?
