Isaiah 2 · Grade 3

Walk in the Light

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah saw what would happen in the latter days. The mountain of Yahweh's house would be raised above the hills. All nations would flow to it. Many peoples would go there to learn God's ways.

God will judge between the nations. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation. Isaiah called, "House of Jacob, come, and let's walk in the light of Yahweh."

But the people had filled their land with idols. They worshiped the work of their own hands. Isaiah said the proud would be brought low. The idols shall utterly pass away. Yahweh alone will be exalted in that day.

Isaiah 2 · Grade 4

No More War

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 2 begins with a beautiful picture of the future. In the latter days, the mountain of Yahweh's house will be established on the top of the mountains. All nations shall flow to it. Many peoples will say, "Come, let's go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths."

God will judge fairly between the nations. Weapons will be turned into farm tools: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks." Nations will not learn war any more. So Isaiah calls God's people to walk in the light of Yahweh now.

Then Isaiah describes the people's pride. Their land was full of silver, gold, horses, chariots, and idols. They bowed to things their own fingers had made. Isaiah warns that a day of Yahweh is coming for all that is proud and lifted up. On that day people will throw away their idols, and Yahweh alone will be exalted. The chapter ends, "Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils."

  2. What two weapons will become farm tools?

  3. What was the land full of?

  2. The people trusted riches and things they made. What things are people tempted to trust instead of God today?

Memory Verse

“He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

Isaiah 2 · Grade 5

The Day of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 2 places two pictures side by side. The first looks ahead to the latter days, when the mountain of Yahweh's house will be raised above every hill and all nations will stream to it. People will go up eager to learn: "He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths." For the law will go out of Zion, and Yahweh's word from Jerusalem. God will judge between the nations, and they will beat their swords into plowshares. Micah 4 contains a nearly identical prophecy.

The second picture shows Judah in Isaiah's own day. The land was full of fortune-tellers, treasure, horses, chariots, and idols. People bowed to what their own fingers had made. Isaiah warns of a day of Yahweh of Armies for all that is proud and arrogant, from the cedars of Lebanon to every lofty tower and the ships of Tarshish.

On that day the loftiness of man will be bowed down, and Yahweh alone shall be exalted. People will cast away their idols of silver and gold to the moles and the bats. The chapter ends with a call to stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils. Between the two pictures stands the invitation: "House of Jacob, come, and let's walk in the light of Yahweh."

Show What You Know

  1. Where will the law and Yahweh's word go out from?

  2. Which other book contains a nearly identical prophecy?

  3. What examples of proud and lofty things does Isaiah list?

  4. What will people do with their idols on that day?

  2. Isaiah calls people to walk in God's light now, before the future peace arrives. What would walking in God's light look like in your week?

Memory Verse

“Many peoples shall go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the law shall go out of Zion, and Yahweh’s word from Jerusalem.”
