Isaiah 2 · Grade 5

The Day of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 2 places two pictures side by side. The first looks ahead to the latter days, when the mountain of Yahweh's house will be raised above every hill and all nations will stream to it. People will go up eager to learn: "He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths." For the law will go out of Zion, and Yahweh's word from Jerusalem. God will judge between the nations, and they will beat their swords into plowshares. Micah 4 contains a nearly identical prophecy.

The second picture shows Judah in Isaiah's own day. The land was full of fortune-tellers, treasure, horses, chariots, and idols. People bowed to what their own fingers had made. Isaiah warns of a day of Yahweh of Armies for all that is proud and arrogant, from the cedars of Lebanon to every lofty tower and the ships of Tarshish.

On that day the loftiness of man will be bowed down, and Yahweh alone shall be exalted. People will cast away their idols of silver and gold to the moles and the bats. The chapter ends with a call to stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils. Between the two pictures stands the invitation: "House of Jacob, come, and let's walk in the light of Yahweh."
