Isaiah 2 · Grade 4
No More War
Read and Think
Isaiah 2 begins with a beautiful picture of the future. In the latter days, the mountain of Yahweh's house will be established on the top of the mountains. All nations shall flow to it. Many peoples will say, "Come, let's go up to the mountain of Yahweh, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths."
God will judge fairly between the nations. Weapons will be turned into farm tools: "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks." Nations will not learn war any more. So Isaiah calls God's people to walk in the light of Yahweh now.
Then Isaiah describes the people's pride. Their land was full of silver, gold, horses, chariots, and idols. They bowed to things their own fingers had made. Isaiah warns that a day of Yahweh is coming for all that is proud and lifted up. On that day people will throw away their idols, and Yahweh alone will be exalted. The chapter ends, "Stop trusting in man, whose breath is in his nostrils."
Show What You Know
What will people say when they go to God's mountain?
What two weapons will become farm tools?
What was the land full of?
What does the chapter tell people to stop doing?
Think About It
The nations want God to teach them his ways. What is one thing you want God to teach you?
The people trusted riches and things they made. What things are people tempted to trust instead of God today?
Memory Verse
“He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
