Isaiah 19 · Grade 5

Egypt My People

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 19 shows the Lord coming in judgment on Egypt, the ancient oppressor of Israel. "Yahweh rides on a swift cloud," and Egypt's idols tremble, recalling the plagues of Exodus that judged Egypt's gods (Exodus 12:12). Egypt's famous wisdom fails: "The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish." Even the Nile, the source of Egypt's life and wealth, would dry up.

Then the chapter turns with five "in that day" promises. Egypt would fear Yahweh, cities would speak "the language of Canaan," and "there will be an altar to Yahweh in the middle of the land of Egypt." Like Israel under Pharaoh, the Egyptians would "cry to Yahweh because of oppressors," and God would "send them a savior and a defender." Verse 22 sums up God's purpose: "striking and healing. They will return to Yahweh, and he will be entreated by them, and will heal them."

The climax is stunning: "there will be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria," and the two empires that had crushed Israel would worship together. Israel would be "the third with Egypt and with Assyria, a blessing within the earth," fulfilling God's promise to Abraham that all nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:3). God gives Egypt and Assyria titles once reserved for Israel: "Egypt my people, Assyria the work of my hands." In the New Testament, Jesus sends his disciples to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).
