When the Trumpet Is Blown

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah spoke to Ethiopia, a land beyond the rivers. Its people sent messengers by the sea in boats of papyrus.

Isaiah called to everyone on earth: "when a banner is lifted up on the mountains, look! When the trumpet is blown, listen!" God said He would be still and watch from His dwelling place.

God was like clear heat in sunshine and like a cloud of dew in harvest. In that time, a present would be brought to Yahweh of Armies from that tall and smooth people. They would bring it to Mount Zion.

Isaiah 18 · Grade 4

A Present for Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 18 addresses "the land of the rustling of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia." This powerful nation sent ambassadors "in vessels of papyrus on the waters." Isaiah describes them as "a nation tall and smooth."

Isaiah's answer goes to the whole world: "when a banner is lifted up on the mountains, look! When the trumpet is blown, listen!" God was not rushing to act. He said, "I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest." God would act at the right time, cutting off the branches before the harvest.

The chapter ends with hope: "In that time, a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies" from this distant people, "to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion." Even faraway nations would one day honor the true God.

Show What You Know

  1. How did Ethiopia send its ambassadors?

  2. What should the whole world do when the banner is lifted and the trumpet blown?

  3. What does God say he will do while the nations hurry?

  4. Where would the distant people bring their present?

Think About It

  1. God waited calmly while the nations rushed around. How can you trust God's timing when you want things to happen right away?

  2. People from a faraway land brought a gift to God. How does this encourage you to pray for people in other countries?

Memory Verse

“In that time, a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies from a people tall and smooth, even from a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that measures out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion.”

Isaiah 18 · Grade 5

Like a Cloud of Dew in Harvest

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 18 is addressed to Cush, the land beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, which ruled Egypt in Isaiah's day. Its ambassadors traveled "in vessels of papyrus" on the Nile. Isaiah sends them home: "Go, you swift messengers."

Instead Isaiah calls "All you inhabitants of the world" to watch God's banner and listen for his trumpet. God's posture is calm: "I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest." Like a vinedresser who prunes just before harvest, God would cut off the sprigs and spreading branches at the right moment.

The final verse looks ahead to worship: "a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies from a people tall and smooth," brought "to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion." Psalm 68:31 also pictures Ethiopia stretching out her hands to God. In the New Testament, an Ethiopian official reads Isaiah and is baptized (Acts 8:27-38), an echo of this hope.

Show What You Know

  1. How did Ethiopia send ambassadors?

  2. What pictures describe God's calm watching?

  3. What does God cut off before the harvest?

  4. Which New Testament story is an echo of this hope?

  1. Isaiah sent the messengers home and pointed to God's banner. Where are you tempted to look for security instead of God?

  2. God waited like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest. How can God's patience shape the way you wait for answers to prayer?

For Yahweh said to me, “I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
