Isaiah 18 · Grade 5
Like a Cloud of Dew in Harvest
Read and Think
Isaiah 18 is addressed to Cush, the land beyond the rivers of Ethiopia, which ruled Egypt in Isaiah's day. Its ambassadors traveled "in vessels of papyrus" on the Nile. Isaiah sends them home: "Go, you swift messengers."
Instead Isaiah calls "All you inhabitants of the world" to watch God's banner and listen for his trumpet. God's posture is calm: "I will be still, and I will see in my dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest." Like a vinedresser who prunes just before harvest, God would cut off the sprigs and spreading branches at the right moment.
The final verse looks ahead to worship: "a present will be brought to Yahweh of Armies from a people tall and smooth," brought "to the place of the name of Yahweh of Armies, Mount Zion." Psalm 68:31 also pictures Ethiopia stretching out her hands to God. In the New Testament, an Ethiopian official reads Isaiah and is baptized (Acts 8:27-38), an echo of this hope.
