The Rock of Your Strength

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah gave a message about Damascus, the city of Syria. Israel had joined with Syria. Both would lose their glory.

Israel would be like an olive tree after the harvest. Only a few olives would be left at the very top. But in that day, people will look to their Maker.

God said, "you have forgotten the God of your salvation." They had not remembered the rock of their strength. The nations would roar like the sea, but God would chase them away like chaff in the wind.

Memory Verse

“In that day, people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel.”

Isaiah 17 · Grade 4

The Gleanings of Olives

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 17 is "The burden of Damascus." Syria's capital and its partner, Israel (also called Ephraim), had joined against Judah in chapter 7. Isaiah said Damascus would become "a ruinous heap," and the glory of Jacob "will be made thin."

Israel would be like a field after harvest, or an olive tree with only "two or three olives in the top of the uppermost bough." Yet these few left behind would turn to God: "people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel." They would no longer look to the altars they had made with their own hands.

The reason for the trouble is given in verse 10: "For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not remembered the rock of your strength." The chapter ends with the nations rushing like roaring waters. But God would rebuke them, and they would flee "like the chaff of the mountains before the wind."

Show What You Know

  1. What two kingdoms had joined against Judah in chapter 7?

  2. What picture shows that only a few would be left?

  3. Why did trouble come, according to verse 10?

  4. What happens to the roaring nations when God rebukes them?

Think About It

  1. Israel forgot the rock of your strength. What helps you remember God during busy or easy times?

  2. The people made altars with their own hands. What things do people today trust instead of their Maker?

Memory Verse

“For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not remembered the rock of your strength. Therefore you plant pleasant plants, and set out foreign seedlings.”

Isaiah 17 · Grade 5

The Rock of Your Strength

Name Date

Read and Think

The oracle begins with Damascus but quickly includes Israel, because the two kingdoms had allied against Judah (Isaiah 7). Damascus would be "taken away from being a city," and the fortress would cease from Ephraim. Assyria fulfilled this when it conquered Damascus in 732 BC and Samaria in 722 BC Israel's glory would waste away "like when the harvester gathers the wheat."

Yet God preserves a remnant, like gleanings left in a field. The result is repentance: "In that day, people will look to their Maker, and their eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel." They would no longer look to "the work of their hands," the Asherah poles and incense altars of false worship. True revival means turning from what we make to the One who made us.

Verse 10 diagnoses the root problem: "you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not remembered the rock of your strength." Israel planted "pleasant plants" and "foreign seedlings," pictures of seeking help from foreign gods, but yet "the harvest flees away in the day of grief." Verses 12-14 show the nations roaring like many waters, yet God rebukes them, and they vanish overnight: "This is the portion of those who plunder us." This anticipates God's rescue of Jerusalem from Assyria in Isaiah 37.

Show What You Know

  1. When did Assyria conquer Damascus and Samaria?

  2. What would the remnant turn away from?

  3. What do the pleasant plants and foreign seedlings picture?

  4. Which later event does verses 12-14 anticipate?
