A Throne in the Tent of David

Moab was told to send lambs to the ruler in Zion. Moab's people were like wandering birds, scattered at the river.

Isaiah said, "Hide the outcasts!" Moab's people needed a safe place. God's people should be a hiding place for those who flee.

Then Isaiah promised, "A throne will be established in loving kindness." One would sit on it in truth, in the tent of David. He would seek justice and do righteousness quickly.

Isaiah 16 · Grade 4

Shelter for the Outcasts

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 16 continues the message about Moab. Moab is told to "Send the lambs for the ruler of the land" to Mount Zion, a sign of turning to Judah's king. The women of Moab are like "wandering birds, as a scattered nest" at the fords of the Arnon.

Moab's refugees ask for help: "Hide the outcasts! Don't betray the fugitive." God says, "Let my outcasts dwell with you!" Then comes a promise: "A throne will be established in loving kindness." One will sit on it "in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness."

But Moab's pride stood in the way: "We have heard of the pride of Moab, that he is very proud." Its vineyards and joyful harvest shouts would end. Isaiah said, "my heart sounds like a harp for Moab." Within three years, Moab's glory would be brought low.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was Moab told to send lambs to Zion?

  2. What does God say about his outcasts?

  3. Describe the ruler on the throne in the tent of David.

  4. What stood in Moab's way?

Think About It

  1. God's people were to shelter outcasts. Who are the outcasts in your community, and how can you welcome them?

  2. Moab's pride kept it from receiving help. How can pride keep us from asking God or others for help?

Memory Verse

“A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.”

Isaiah 16 · Grade 5

Swift to Do Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 16 completes the oracle on Moab. Moab is invited to "Send the lambs for the ruler of the land" to "the mountain of the daughter of Zion." King Mesha of Moab had once paid lambs as tribute to Israel (2 Kings 3:4). Moab's scattered people stand "as wandering birds" at the fords of the Arnon, and they plead with Judah: "Hide the outcasts! Don't betray the fugitive."

In the middle of judgment, verse 5 shines with messianic hope: "A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David." The Hebrew idea of loving kindness, God's covenant faithfulness, would mark this King's reign. In the New Testament, Luke 1:32-33 promises that God would give Jesus the throne of his father David. Moab's hope lay in seeking refuge under David's King.

Yet Moab refused: "We have heard of the pride of Moab, that he is very proud." Its famous vineyards of Sibmah would fail, and "gladness is taken away." Isaiah wept: "my heart sounds like a harp for Moab." Moab would pray at its sanctuary, but "he will not prevail." Verse 14 gave a deadline: "Within three years," Moab's glory would be brought into contempt.

Show What You Know

  1. What had King Mesha paid as tribute to Israel?

  2. What messianic hope appears in verse 5?

  3. What does Luke 1:32-33 promise?

  4. What deadline did verse 14 give?

Think About It

  1. Moab could have found refuge under David's throne but was too proud. In the New Testament, Jesus invites the weary to come to him (Matthew 11:28). How can pride keep people from coming to him today?

  2. Isaiah 16:5 speaks of a throne established in loving kindness. How does knowing that your King is kind change the way you approach him in prayer?
