Isaiah 16 · Grade 5

Swift to Do Righteousness

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 16 completes the oracle on Moab. Moab is invited to "Send the lambs for the ruler of the land" to "the mountain of the daughter of Zion." King Mesha of Moab had once paid lambs as tribute to Israel (2 Kings 3:4). Moab's scattered people stand "as wandering birds" at the fords of the Arnon, and they plead with Judah: "Hide the outcasts! Don't betray the fugitive."

In the middle of judgment, verse 5 shines with messianic hope: "A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David." The Hebrew idea of loving kindness, God's covenant faithfulness, would mark this King's reign. In the New Testament, Luke 1:32-33 promises that God would give Jesus the throne of his father David. Moab's hope lay in seeking refuge under David's King.

Yet Moab refused: "We have heard of the pride of Moab, that he is very proud." Its famous vineyards of Sibmah would fail, and "gladness is taken away." Isaiah wept: "my heart sounds like a harp for Moab." Moab would pray at its sanctuary, but "he will not prevail." Verse 14 gave a deadline: "Within three years," Moab's glory would be brought into contempt.

Think About It

  1. Moab could have found refuge under David's throne but was too proud. In the New Testament, Jesus invites the weary to come to him (Matthew 11:28). How can pride keep people from coming to him today?

  2. Isaiah 16:5 speaks of a throne established in loving kindness. How does knowing that your King is kind change the way you approach him in prayer?

Memory Verse

“A throne will be established in loving kindness. One will sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging, seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.”
