Isaiah 12 · Grade 5
Draw Water with Joy
Read and Think
Isaiah 12 closes the first major section of the book (chapters 1-12) with a hymn. After warnings of judgment and the promise of Immanuel and the King from Jesse, the people respond with thanks: "I will give thanks to you, Yahweh; for though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me." Comfort after discipline becomes a major theme later in the book, beginning in chapter 40.
Verse 2 is a confession of faith: "Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid." The phrase "Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song; and he has become my salvation" repeats the song of Moses in Exodus 15:2 and is sung again in Psalm 118:14. The God who rescued Israel from Egypt would rescue his people again. Verse 3 adds, "with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation." In the New Testament, Jesus offers living water to all who are thirsty (John 7:37-38).
Verses 4-6 call God's people to mission and worship: "Give thanks to Yahweh! Call on his name! Declare his doings among the peoples!" The salvation God gives is meant to be known "in all the earth." The song ends with the reason for joy: "the Holy One of Israel is great among you!" The holy God whom Isaiah saw in chapter 6 now dwells among his people as their Savior.
