Isaiah 12 · Grade 4
My Strength and Song
Read and Think
After the promise of the King from Jesse in chapter 11, Isaiah 12 gives God's people a song to sing "in that day." It begins with thanks: "though you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you comfort me."
The heart of the song is trust: "Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah, Yahweh, is my strength and song." These words echo the song Moses and Israel sang after crossing the Red Sea in Exodus 15:2. Isaiah adds a picture of joy: "with joy you will draw water out of the wells of salvation."
The song then turns outward. God's people will "Declare his doings among the peoples!" and "Let this be known in all the earth!" Praise is not kept private. It ends with a shout: "the Holy One of Israel is great among you!"
