Isaiah 11 · Grade 4

The Spirit-Filled King

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 11 pictures a tree cut down to a stump. Yet "a shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse." Jesse was David's father, so this King would come from David's royal family. "Yahweh's Spirit will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh."

This King would not judge by what he sees or hears. Instead, "he will judge the poor with righteousness, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth." Righteousness and faithfulness would be like a belt around his waist.

Then Isaiah describes a world at peace. "The wolf will live with the lamb," and "a little child will lead them." No one will hurt nor destroy on God's holy mountain, "for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea." The nations will seek the root of Jesse.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Isaiah mention Jesse?

  2. Name three things the Spirit would give the King.

  3. How will the King judge the poor?

  4. Why will no one hurt nor destroy on God's holy mountain?

Think About It

  1. The King would care for the poor and humble. Who are the humble people around you, and how can you show them fairness?

  2. Isaiah pictured animals living in peace. Where would you love to see God's peace in your home or neighborhood?

Memory Verse

“Yahweh’s Spirit will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh.”

Isaiah 11 · Grade 5

The Root of Jesse

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 11 follows the picture of Assyria cut down like a forest with a different kind of tree: "A shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots will bear fruit." David's royal line would seem like a stump, yet God would bring new life from it. Yahweh's Spirit would rest on this King with wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and "the fear of Yahweh."

Unlike human rulers, this King "will not judge by the sight of his eyes." He will defend the poor and the humble, and "righteousness will be the belt around his waist." His reign brings a peace so complete that creation itself is changed: the wolf and the lamb, the leopard and the young goat, the cow and the bear live together, and "a little child will lead them." Even a nursing child can play safely near a cobra's hole.

"They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea." The root of Jesse will stand "as a banner of the peoples," and the nations will seek him. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 10 in Romans 15:12 to show that the Gentiles hope in Christ, and Revelation 5:5 calls Jesus the Root of David. God would also gather his scattered people "from the four corners of the earth."

Show What You Know

  1. What picture shows that David's royal line seemed finished but would live again?

  2. What shows how complete the King's peace will be?

  3. What will the earth be full of?

  4. Where does Paul quote verse 10?
