Isaiah 11 · Grade 4
The Spirit-Filled King
Read and Think
Isaiah 11 pictures a tree cut down to a stump. Yet "a shoot will come out of the stock of Jesse." Jesse was David's father, so this King would come from David's royal family. "Yahweh's Spirit will rest on him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh."
This King would not judge by what he sees or hears. Instead, "he will judge the poor with righteousness, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth." Righteousness and faithfulness would be like a belt around his waist.
Then Isaiah describes a world at peace. "The wolf will live with the lamb," and "a little child will lead them." No one will hurt nor destroy on God's holy mountain, "for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea." The nations will seek the root of Jesse.
Show What You Know
Why does Isaiah mention Jesse?
Name three things the Spirit would give the King.
How will the King judge the poor?
Why will no one hurt nor destroy on God's holy mountain?
Think About It
The King would care for the poor and humble. Who are the humble people around you, and how can you show them fairness?
Isaiah pictured animals living in peace. Where would you love to see God's peace in your home or neighborhood?
Memory Verse

Take It Home
For families: talk about these together.
- The coming ruler would not decide by looks or rumors. How can you be fair to someone before you know the whole story?
- How can you help more people come to know God?
