Isaiah 10 · Grade 3

A Remnant Will Return

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah warned leaders who wrote unfair laws. They robbed the poor of their rights. They took from widows and from children with no father. God asked them where they would run for help.

God used the king of Assyria like a rod to correct His people. But the king was proud. He said, "By the strength of my hand I have done it." God asked, "Should an ax brag against him who chops with it?"

God promised that a remnant would return. They would lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel. God told His people in Zion not to be afraid of the Assyrian. Their heavy yoke would be lifted from their shoulders.

“A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.”

Isaiah 10 · Grade 4

The Ax and the One Who Chops

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 10 begins with a woe against leaders who "decree unrighteous decrees." Their laws deprived the needy of justice and turned widows and the fatherless into prey. God asked what they would do in the day of visitation, and where they would leave their wealth.

God called Assyria "the rod of my anger." He would send Assyria against His unfaithful people. But the king of Assyria had other plans. He boasted, "By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom." God answered with a picture: "Should an ax brag against him who chops with it?" The tool cannot boast against the one who holds it, so God would humble the proud king.

Then comes hope. A remnant of Israel would no longer lean on the one who struck them, "but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth." The name of Isaiah's son Shear Jashub means a remnant will return, and verse 21 says it plainly: "A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God." God told His people, "don't be afraid of the Assyrian," for the yoke would be taken from their neck.

Show What You Know

  1. Who were the victims of the unrighteous decrees?

  2. What did God call Assyria?

  3. What picture did God use to answer the king's boasting?

  4. Who would the remnant lean on in truth?

Think About It

  1. God cared about laws that hurt the poor. How can you stand up for people who are treated unfairly?

  2. The king took credit for what God allowed. How can you give God credit for the good things you are able to do?

Memory Verse

“It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.”

Isaiah 10 · Grade 5

A Remnant Will Return

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 10:1-4 closes the series of woes with a charge against lawmakers who "write oppressive decrees," robbing the poor of their rights so "that widows may be their plunder." God asked them, "To whom will you flee for help?" The refrain returns one last time: "For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still."

Verses 5-19 reveal a surprising truth about history. God called Assyria "the rod of my anger" and used it to discipline a profane nation. Yet the Assyrian king did not mean so; it was "in his heart to destroy." He boasted about his own strength and wisdom, saying he had gathered the riches of the peoples like eggs from a nest. God's reply exposes the folly of pride: "Should an ax brag against him who chops with it?" God remains sovereign even over empires that do not know him, and he would punish the king's "willful proud heart."

Verses 20-34 turn to the remnant. Though Israel was "like the sand of the sea," only a remnant would return "to the mighty God," the same title given to the child in 9:6. In the New Testament, Paul quotes verses 22-23 in Romans 9:27-28 to show that God keeps a faithful remnant. God told Zion, "don't be afraid of the Assyrian," because "his burden will depart from off your shoulder." The chapter ends with the Assyrian army marching close to Jerusalem, shaking its fist at Zion, until God cuts down the proud like trees of a forest.

Show What You Know

  1. What refrain returns in verse 4?

  2. What did the Assyrian king compare his conquests to?

  3. What title links the remnant's God in 10:21 to the child of 9:6?

  4. Where does Paul quote Isaiah 10:22-23?

Crossword

Across

  1. That ____ may be their plunder.
  2. To deprive the ____ of justice.

Down

  1. Only a ____ of them will return.
  2. And to rob the ____ among my people of their rights.
  3. ____ to those who decree unrighteous decrees.

Think About It

  1. The king of Assyria was a tool in God's hand but thought he was in charge. How does knowing that God rules over history give you peace when the news is frightening?

  2. God promised that a remnant would lean on him in truth. What is the difference between leaning on God in truth and only saying we trust him?

Memory Verse

“It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.”
