Isaiah 1 · Grade 3

Come, Let's Reason Together

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah the son of Amoz saw a vision about Judah and Jerusalem. God said his people had rebelled. An ox knows its owner, and a donkey knows where it eats. But God's people did not know him.

The people brought many offerings. But they kept doing evil, so God did not delight in them. He told them to wash and make themselves clean. He said to stop doing evil and learn to do well. They should seek justice and plead for the widow.

Then Yahweh invited them to reason together. Though their sins were as scarlet, they would be as white as snow. If they were willing and obedient, they would eat the good of the land. Zion would be redeemed with justice.

Isaiah 1 · Grade 4

Learn to Do Well

Name Date

Read and Think

The book begins with the vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz. He saw it in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Yahweh calls heaven and earth to listen. He has raised children who rebelled against him. "The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know." The land had suffered, yet Yahweh had left a very small remnant.

The people offered many sacrifices and kept feasts, but they did not stop doing evil. God said he was weary of their feasts and would not hear their many prayers. Instead he gave clear commands: "Wash yourselves. Make yourself clean." "Cease to do evil. Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Defend the fatherless. Plead for the widow."

Then came an invitation: "Come now, and let's reason together," says Yahweh. Sins as scarlet could be as white as snow. God warned that refusing and rebelling would bring judgment. But he promised to restore judges as at the first, and the city would be called a faithful town. Zion shall be redeemed with justice.

Isaiah 1 · Grade 5

Sins Like Scarlet

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 1 opens with heaven and earth called to listen while Yahweh speaks: "I have nourished and brought up children and they have rebelled against me." Even an ox and a donkey know who feeds them, but God's people did not consider. The land had been struck again and again, and only a very small remnant remained, so that Judah was not like Sodom and Gomorrah.

The people still kept religious feasts and offered many sacrifices. Yet God said he did not delight in them, because their hands were full of blood and their lives were full of evil. Worship without obedience was a burden to him. God's answer was a call to change: "Cease to do evil. Learn to do well. Seek justice. Relieve the oppressed. Defend the fatherless. Plead for the widow."

Then Yahweh offers mercy: "Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." The choice was real. Willing obedience would bring the good of the land, but rebellion would bring the sword. God promised to purge away the dross like a refiner and restore faithful judges. "Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and her converts with righteousness." In the New Testament, 1 John 1:9 teaches that God is faithful to forgive and cleanse those who confess their sins.
