Not Hidden from God

Name Date

Read the Story

God called to the priests, the people of Israel, and the king's house. He said, I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me. God knew everything they did.

The people's pride testified against them. They would go with their flocks to look for God, but they did not come with their hearts. A trumpet would sound a warning.

When Israel saw their sickness, they went to Assyria for help. But the king of Assyria could not heal them. God said He would wait until they admitted their wrong and would seek his face.

Hosea 5 · Grade 4

Israel Is Not Hidden

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 5 opens with a call to listen. Listen to this, you priests! Listen, house of Israel, and give ear, house of the king! God said, I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me. The leaders had been a trap for the people instead of guides.

Their deeds won't allow them to turn to their God, for the spirit of prostitution is within them. Hosea uses this phrase for their love of false gods. They would come with their flocks to seek Yahweh, but they would not find Him, because their hearts were not truly turned to Him.

When Ephraim saw his sickness, he went to Assyria. But the king of Assyria is not able to heal you. God said He was like a moth and like a lion to them. Then He said, I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face.

  1. Who did God tell to listen?

  2. What had the leaders been?

  3. Why did the people not find God?

  4. What was God waiting for?

Hosea 5 · Grade 5

Until They Seek My Face

Name Date

Read and Think

Hosea 5 addresses all of Israel's leadership. Listen to this, you priests! Listen, house of Israel, and give ear, house of the king! For the judgment is against you. God's knowledge is complete: I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me. The leaders had been like a snare, trapping people in sin.

Hosea shows how sin traps people. Their deeds won't allow them to turn to their God, for the spirit of prostitution is within them, and they don't know Yahweh. They brought sacrifices, but they won't find him. He has withdrawn himself from them. Religious activity without a turned heart does not reach God.

When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria. But the king of Assyria is not able to heal you. God describes Himself as a moth to Ephraim and a lion to Judah. The judgment had a purpose: I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offense, and seek my face. In their affliction they will seek me earnestly.

Show What You Know

  1. Who did God address in this chapter?

  2. What did their deeds keep them from doing?

  3. Why did their sacrifices not find God?

  4. Why could Assyria not help?

  5. What was the purpose of God's judgment?
