Genesis 33 · Grade 5
Reconciliation
Read and Think
Genesis 33 resolves the twenty-year conflict between Jacob and Esau. Jacob, still cautious, arranges his family by order of favor, which reveals that his household still has problems. Yet he no longer hides behind them. He goes ahead and bows seven times, a gesture of humble submission. The one who had received the blessing be lord over your brothers now calls himself Esau's servant.
Esau runs to embrace Jacob, falls on his neck, and kisses him, and they weep together. Whatever Esau had planned, God had changed his heart. Jacob's words are striking: I have seen your face, as one sees the face of God. Having just seen God's face at Peniel and been spared, he now sees grace in his brother's face. Reconciliation with God and reconciliation with others belong together (Matthew 5:23-24).
Jacob presses Esau to accept his gift, using the word blessing: Please take the gift that I brought to you. In a sense, Jacob was returning what he had taken. Jacob then declines to travel with Esau and settles near Shechem. He buys land, as Abraham did, and builds an altar to El-Elohe-Israel, claiming the God of Abraham and Isaac as his own God under his new name.
